Biography

Dr. Paul Buhler is a Certified Big Data Science Professional, Scientist, Consultant and Engineer. In addition, Paul is certified as a SOA Professional, Consultant, Analyst, Architect and Security Specialist. He has been a Certified Trainer for over 7 years and has over 25 years of professional experience. Paul is a respected researcher, practitioner and educator of service-oriented computing and data science topic areas. He serves as the Chair of the SOA Education Committee for SOASchool.com and is on the program committee of numerous international conferences and workshops relevant to the advancement of service-oriented computing and service engineering.

Paul's experience in Data Science is driven by the growing market for intelligent business process management, which utilizes analytics to align process execution with business intent. He has been involved in advanced work with the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) related to tracking the provenance of business events. In 2004, Paul was a participant on the committee that designed one of the pioneering undergraduate Data Science curriculums in the United States, at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. Furthermore, Paul is the co-author of the forthcoming Prentice Hall title, "Big Data Fundamentals: Concepts, Drivers and Techniques" (ISBN: 978-0134291079). He has also taught undergraduate data science courses graduate and undergraduate Computer Science courses at the College of Charleston.

From an industry perspective, Paul has worked on many federal programs, both civilian and military. This experience includes a naval weapons direction system, a manufacturing execution system for naval supply, an educational claims processing system for the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and recently a logistics support system for the US Marine Corps. As a cleared resource, Paul has worked on several classified programs as well.

Dr. Buhler earned his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of South Carolina. His research interests lie in the area of process-aware information systems, which leverage agent-based approaches for dynamic alignment to strategy, as well as resilient execution.
